The return of the lower 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector is a “meaningful step” and one which will provide much-needed breathing space for many Irish businesses, a global financial technology company has said.

Speaking about the reinstallation of the rate, which officially happens today, John O’Beirne, CEO of Dublin-based global fintech, Squareup International, which provides popular point-of-sale solutions to retailers, said: “The VAT cut for hospitality coming into effect today comes at a critical moment for Ireland’s food and beverage industry. For restaurants, cafés and pubs already managing tight margins, this cut will provide welcome breathing space, allowing operators to reinvest, retain staff, and focus more on delivering great experiences to their customers. As we head into the all-important summer season, today is a meaningful step forward for the sector, and one that will help Irish businesses to thrive.”
