Every November, Los Cabos comes alive with colour and music as the destination marks Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), one of Mexico’s most cherished traditions. Taking place between 1-2 November, the celebration honours loved ones who have passed, with candlelit altars, marigolds, traditional cuisine and Catrina figures transforming the streets of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. From public festivals and illuminated boat processions to culinary experiences and cultural events, visitors can discover the traditions of Día de los Muertos against the stunning backdrop of Baja California Sur.

The Meaning Behind Día de los Muertos

At the heart of Día de los Muertos are ofrendas, traditional altars decorated with photographs, candles, marigolds and favourite foods to honour departed loved ones. Bright orange marigolds, known as cempasúchil, are believed to guide spirits home, while elegantly dressed Catrina figures have become one of the celebration’s most recognisable symbols. Visitors can discover these traditions firsthand in the historic centre of San José del Cabo and the public plazas of Cabo San Lucas, where colourful displays and community celebrations bring Mexico’s cultural heritage to life.

Parades and Processions in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas hosts a lively programme of public festivities, with the Sea of Offerings festival taking place at Plaza Amelia Wilkes where the downtown plaza will come alive with live music, food stalls and colourful decorations. On 1st November, the celebrations continue with the Day of the Dead Parade through the town centre and Avenida Lázaro Cárdenas, while the marina hosts Altares en el Mar, an illuminated procession of boats decorated with candles and marigolds, creating a moving tribute to loved ones against the backdrop of the waterfront.
