When you travel with two highly energetic children, finding a holiday destination that bridges the gap between genuine adult luxury and genuine childhood magic is notoriously difficult. Most high-end resorts are designed for couples and merely tolerate children; others are so focused on kids that parents are left feeling like they are staying in an amusement park. Then we discovered Forte Village Resort on Sardinia’s breathtaking southern coast, and everything changed.

Tucked away within 120 acres of lush, fragrant tropical gardens just 45 minutes from Cagliari, Forte Village isn’t just a resort; it is a meticulously designed self-contained paradise. Here is how we spent a week experiencing the perfect balance of relaxation, high-octane adventure, and world-class dining.

The Journey: Straight from Dublin to the Sardinian Sun

Getting the family packed and out of the house is often the hardest part of any holiday, but our trip started with only a few early morning tantrums.

To start, we caught the direct Ryanair flight from Dublin Airport straight into Cagliari Elmas Airport. Taking just over three hours, it is the perfect flight length for travelling with kids—short enough to avoid any mid-flight meltdowns, yet long enough for everyone to settle in with a book or a tablet.

Landing in Cagliari, the Mediterranean warmth hit us immediately when the plane doors opened, and as always, it signalled the start of my holiday.

From there, the resort’s pre-arranged private transfer was waiting to whisk us off to the resort. The 45-minute drive along the coast flew by, and before the kids could even ask "Are we there yet?", we were pulling through the gates of Forte Village.

Our Tropical Haven: The Bungalow Living

Because Forte Village is made up of eight distinct hotels, there are accommodation types to suit every family dynamic. We chose to stay in a Deluxe Family Bungalow at Hotel Le Palme, which proved to be an absolute dream. Its location in the gardens dotted with pine and palm trees offered me the perfect blend of privacy and togetherness.

What I really loved was that the kids had their own separate space, yet everything was under one roof, and I could chill out and relax on the private patio without having to sit and watch their every move. Every morning started the same way: stepping out onto the patio to the sound of birds - a sound I really love – started the day in the perfect no-stress manner you can sometimes only dream of.

A Playground Like No Other: Academies, Aquaparks, and Leisureland

If there is one thing that defines Forte Village, it is the sheer breadth of activities available for children. It is virtually impossible for a child to utter the words "I’m bored" here. And trust me, my two would give those words a go on a good day!

For my youngest, Max, age 6, "Children’s Wonderland" was just brilliant. The absolute highlight was Mario’s Village—a scaled-down miniature town complete with nine houses, a city hall, a cinema, and a petrol station where kids can engage in creative roleplay. Both my 6-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter loved the interactive Barbie Activity Centre and the shallow splash pools fitted with playful fountains.

Meanwhile, the sports academies are in a league of their own. These aren't standard hotel animation games; they are elite training grounds often coached by former Olympians and professional legends. From the Chelsea Football Club Foundation Academy to world-class tennis, netball, and swimming academies, the instruction is spectacular. Alas, my two were born with two left feet, so we couldn’t really engage too much in this part, although I have never seen so many happy tweens and teens in one area, ever.

In the afternoons, we would converge at the Baia delle Palme pool complex, where an incredible aquapark boasting 250 metres of winding water slides and sprays sits. For older kids and teenagers, the resort features "Leisureland," an adrenaline-fuelled zone complete with a professional go-kart track, a 10-pin bowling alley, and a high-tech gaming area. You see what I mean? The entertainment and activities are top class and endless. This doesn’t even mention the resort's entertainment team, who are some of the best I have ever come across in my travels.

Pure Serenity: The Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa

While the children were thoroughly entertained under the watchful, expert eyes of the resort’s childcare staff, I wish I was able to slip away to the world-renowned Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa. Although I did have a good look around, the guilt levels were too high. This area is hidden within a centuries-old garden; this wellness oasis is famous for its unique six-pool thalassotherapy circuit. The spa attendant told me that each outdoor pool varies in temperature and salt concentration, allowing you to float effortlessly from a high-density sea-oil pool to cooler, mineral-rich waters. The detoxifying and muscle-soothing effects are instant. Does anyone know when mummy guilt stops – or does it ever?

A Culinary Journey: 21 Restaurants to Choose From

Dining at Forte Village is an event in itself. With up to 21 restaurants operating during the high season, the resort takes you on a global culinary journey without ever requiring you to step outside the gates.

For effortless family dinners, we loved the rich, traditional Italian and Sardinian buffets at La Pineta and the premium meats at the Forte Grill. But what makes the property truly remarkable is its dedication to fine dining. Parents can indulge in exquisite à la carte meals from Michelin-starred guest chefs, enjoying dishes like summer truffle ravioli with a view of the sea at Le Dune. The resort handles family dining masterfully. There is even a dedicated Children’s Restaurant with a menu designed specifically for younger palates, offering high-quality, nutritious meals alongside pureed options for babies. No matter where we ate, the staff treated our children with classic Italian warmth, making us feel completely welcome even in the more elegant dining areas. And for those who have travelled luxury before, you will know that this is not always the case.

The Verdict: A Genuinely Perfect Family Property

What makes Forte Village stand out above any other Mediterranean resort we have visited is its rare philosophy: it treats children as VIPs while maintaining an uncompromised standard of luxury for adults. Whether we were building sandcastles on the sandy private beach, cycling down the garden paths on our rented bikes, or listening to live music in the buzzing central Piazza Luisa after dinner, every moment felt seamless.

For a family looking to balance high-energy sports, deep spa relaxation, and gourmet dining, Forte Village isn’t just a wonderful property—it’s the gold standard, and I would recommend it highly, to everyone.
