Comporta: Europe's Best-Kept Luxury Secret

I have heard Comporta described as the “Ibiza of the 80’s”, as the big-name hotel came in, before the DJs and the infamous Saint Antonio, back when the focus was on the rugged beauty of the island, the pristine beaches and stunning sunsets.

Comporta embodies most of these qualities and draws a certain crowd, those well-seasoned jet-set types, looking for everything Comporta has to offer: pristine beaches, cool upscale beach clubs, laid-back stylish restaurants and accommodation that is tastefully designed and aesthetically pleasing.

It’s no wonder Comporta is drawing in the fashionable crowd looking to go off the grid or next to the next hidden gem before it is taken over by the masses. What Comporta has that is reminiscent of Ibiza is the Bohemian beach clubs, like Comporta Cafe or Ilha do Arroz, which offer that laid-back atmosphere, whilst against a purposely designed rustic background, very on trend. It has also been described as the “Hamptons of Portugal ” because of its chic and relaxed approach and elegant boutique vibes; here you’ll find bohemian fashion gems and local artisan crafts. You’ll also find chic restaurants in stunning surroundings, Sophisticated beach clubs, rustic beaches and a charming village.

This picturesque village is definitely worth a visit, and it’s only 90 minutes from Lisbon. It’s worth hiring a car as a car in Comporta can make life easier with kids. My recommendations: Sublime Comporta, which sits in a stunning 17-acre estate, south of Lisbon, on Herdade da Comporta: a swoop of coast between the Sado Estuary and the sea. One of Portugal’s best beaches is just a 15-minute drive away, and, from June to September, you can spend sunny days stretched out on the picturesque Carvalhal beach at the Sublime Comporta beach club, just ten minutes from the hotel. The beach club here is amazing and everything you’ve come to expect from Comporta. It delivers on both food, ambience and aesthetics.

Spatia Comporta is a stunning boutique hotel tucked away on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, where golden beaches stretch out as far as the eye can see, backed by pine woods. You can choose to stay in a spacious room, or you may choose a villa. What Spatia Comporta resort offers is a “wide range of activities, both inside and outside the hotel: sweeping beaches, water sports, dolphin watching, golf, historical sites and an extensive and exciting local cuisine”.

There is also no shortage of great restaurants to choose from; JNCqUOI Deli Comporta was one of my favourites; it blends tradition with style. The food is exceptional, and the cocktails are delicious, a winning combination.

My other favourite restaurant in Comporta was Cavalarica; it’s a trendy restaurant in the village of Comporta. This former stable has been transformed into a beautiful and elegant dining space. The atmosphere is relaxed and warm and the menu offers tasty, inventive dishes. The cocktails are fabulous and original, undeniably the best in Comporta.

The village is the best place to shop for clothes and interiors; my favourites include Rice Marta Mantero, which has the most incredible interiors and Briffa Comporta for beach bags and swimwear.

Comporta is a picturesque village with a paradise beach and chic beach clubs. It really is a place where rustic charm meets refined elegance. It is the ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity, luxury and unspoilt landscapes.
